If your emergency is life-threatening, dial 911 for Emergency Medical Services or go immediately to a hospital emergency room.
Pain is the universal signal that something is wrong. You may be experiencing one or more of the following:
Only a thorough examination by Dr. Ricaud can determine the underlying cause of your pain. Injuries to your teeth and gums can result in infection or other complications. It is very important to contact the office and be seen so further complications are avoided.
A broken or cracked tooth may cause a very painful toothache, especially if the inner pulp of the tooth is exposed. That’s where the tooth’s blood vessels, nerve, and connective tissues are, and if that area becomes inflamed or infected, the pain can be excruciating.
If you have swelling of the gums, face or cheek related to tooth pain, you may have an infection. Tooth decay, gum disease or cracked teeth are common causes of toothaches — and the source of most dental infections. There are numerous other potential causes of tooth swelling. Whatever the cause, it can be a serious issue that is often the result of bacterial infection.
A toothache can be pain in and around the teeth and jaws that's usually caused by tooth decay. You may feel toothache in many ways. It can come and go or be constant. The pain can also be mild or severe. It is very important that you address the pain to prevent a more series and dangerous problem.
An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms around the root of an infected tooth. While pain and swelling are common signs, you may not have any symptoms. Sometimes an abscess causes a pimple-like bump on your gum that is visible. It is important to get the abscess treated and complete the recommended treatment to help prevent the infection from reoccurring.
